Welcome to the Theun Hinboun Power Company
The guiding model of sustainable hydropower in Lao PDR
COMPANY PROFILE
THPC was the first IPP in the hydropower sector of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (“Lao PDR”). THPC’s shareholders include Electricite du Laos (EdL) 60%, Statkraft SF 20% and GMS Lao Company Limited 20%. THPC’s Hydropower Plant is located in both Bolikhamxay and Khammouane Provinces with commercial operations commencing in March 1998.
THPC’s hydropower plant is a trans-basin, run-of-river project, which generates more than 1,100 GWh per year from 210 MW of installed capacity. Pursuant to a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with EGAT,
THPC sells at least 95% of its net available electricity output to EGAT, with the balance sold to EdL for local power demand.
EXPANSION PROJECT
After a decade of successful operations, THPC had decided to expand its project to a new total capacity of 500 MW. The Theun-Hinboun Expansion Project (THXP) involves a 70m high upstream dam and reservoir on the Nam Gnouang River and a new 60MW power station at the Nam Gnouang dam, 230MW expansion of the existing THPC capacity, and 150 km of 115kV and 230kV transmission lines.
The THXP is scheduled to be completed in 2012 with all available electricity output from the downstream power plant (total of 440MW) will be sold to EGAT pursuant to an amended Power Purchase Agreement while the electricity from the upstream powerhouse will be sold exclusively to EdL.
The additional power that will be supplied as a result of the expansion of THPC’s facilities will provide the Lao PDR with significant new revenues and important additional power for industrial growth and development of Lao DPR.
